Thailand boasts an immensely rich cultural heritage, dating back not only over the seven centuries of Thai sovereignty, but also beyond to earlier civilizations that have left their mark on the passage of time. The archaeological site of Ban Chiang, in the northeast, offers a glimpse of a bronze-making culture that dates back some 5000 years, making it one of the cradles of civilization.
Moving into the realm of recorded history, northeastern Thailand is also the site of Phimai, Phanom Rung and other spectacular ancient Khmer monuments built during the reigns of the great god-kings of Angkor.

Equally stunning is Ayutthaya which, like Sukhothai, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and preserves the major monuments of the city that was the Thai capital for more than 400 years before its destruction in 1767.
Situated by the Chao Phraya River, Ayutthaya is ideally visited from Bangkok by boat, a romantic journey that offers vivid insights into the waterborne life that is traditionally Thai.
