Samut Prakan

Also known as Pak Nam, this province is located at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River. The town is only 25 kilometres south of Bangkok and easily frequented by bus; for example, by airconditioned bus No.l1 (Pinklao- Pak Nam) which passes along Ratchadamnoen Avenue and New Petchaburi Road during the earliest stages of its journey.

Major Attractions

  • The Royal Nava Museum

  • It is opposite to the Naval Academy on Sukhumvit Road, 10 kilometres from the Bang Na intersection. The museum displays models of the Royal Barges Procession, as well as equipment and utensils used in warships.

  • Phra Samut Chedi

  • This remarkable white chedi or pagoda is opposite to the City Hall. It is commonly called 'Phra Chedi Klang Nam' as its original location was on an island near the river mouth. An annual celebration, lasting for 9 days, takes place around October.

  • Phra Chulachomldao Fortress

  • Shortly cal1ed 'Pom Phra Chun,' this old fortress is located 7 kilometres south of Phra Samut Chedi on Suksawat Road. lt is open to the public daily and displays an old warship namely 'Rua Luang Mae Klong' as well as several old cannons and binoculars.

  • Thc Ancient City

  • Essentially an open-air museum, this more than 200-acre complex contains scale replicas of religious complexes, monuments and buildings found throughout Thailand. The complex is located at Km. 33 on Sukhumvit Highway and is open daily from 8.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. Admission fee is 50 baht.   • Bang Pu Seaside

  • It is ahout l0 kilometres from the town on Sukhumvit Koad. A pier stretching out over a tidal muddy beach affords a long walkway for those who like to enjoy a pleasant seaside atmosphere. Every evening in the cool season, visitors can view plenty of seagulls flying around the area.

  • Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm

  • Located in the vicinity of Tambon Thai Ban, the complex contains more than 60,000 freshwater and marine crocodiles and a mini zoo. It also offers an exciting show of man playing with this dangerous animal. Open daily from 7.00 a.m. - 6.00 p.m. Admission fee is 300 baht for adults and 200 baht for children.   • Bueng Tako

  • This is a place for people who love playing water sports like water skiing and windsurfing. It supplies players with a full range of sports equipment.   • Pak bo songha Festival

  • This is a famous afld enjoyable festival of the Mon in the Phra Pradaeng District. It is held annually on Sunday after April 13. The Mon celebrate their Songkran Day with religious observances, colourful parades and folk plays.

  • Yon Bua Festival

  • 'Yon Bua' means tossing the lotus. This is a long meritmaking tradition held by the Bang Phli inhabitunts on the 14th day of the waxing moon of the llth month (around October). Large crowds of people will wait to toss lotuses onto the boat bearing a Buddha image, which is sometimes covered with a floral tribute almost up to the head.
